Magnetoelastic coupling and Grüneisen scaling in NdB4

چکیده
We report high-resolution capacitance dilatometry studies on the uniaxial length changes in a NdB$_4$ single crystal. The evolution of magnetically ordered phases below $T_{\rm N}$= 17.2~K (commensurate antiferromagnetic phase, cAFM), IT}$= 6.8~K (intermediate incommensurate IT), and LT}$= 4.8~K (low-temperature LT) is associated with pronounced anomalies thermal expansion coefficients. data imply significant magneto-elastic coupling evidence structural phase transition at LT}$ . While both cAFM LT favor anisotropy $\delta$ between in-plane out-of-plane changes, it competes IT-type order, i.e., suppressed that phase. Notably, finite well above N}$ indicates short-range correlations which are, however, neither cAFM, IT, nor LT-type. Gr\"uneisen analysis ratio coefficient specific heat enables derivation as hydrostatic pressure dependencies. $\alpha$/$c_{\rm p}$ evidences dominant energy scale LT, our precursory fluctuations competing IT respectively. Our results suggest presence orbital degrees freedom successive orbitally ground state.

متن کاملGiant magnetoelastic coupling in a metallic helical metamagnet.
Using high resolution neutron diffraction and capacitance dilatometry we show that the thermal evolution of the helimagnetic state in CoMnSi is accompanied by a change in interatomic distances of up to 2%, the largest ever found in a metallic magnet. Our results and the picture of competing exchange and strongly anisotropic thermal expansion that we use to understand them sheds light on a new m...

Smart adaptive structures and structronic systems have been increasingly investigated and developed in the last two decades. Although smart structures made of piezoelectrics, shape-memory materials, electrostrictive materials, and electro-/magnetorheological fluids have been evaluated extensively, studies of magnetostrictive continua, especially generic mathematical model(s), are still relative...
